KUALA LUMPUR: Angkatan Muda Keadilan has urged the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to carry out an independent investigation into an alleged RM2.1 billion spending discrepancy in the rural roads programme under the Rural and Regional Development Ministry.

AMK strategy director Mohd Shafiq Iqram Abdullah said investigators should examine the financial documents, the sequence of approvals and the role of officials or parties empowered to commit expenditure.

He stressed, however, that a report or a dispute over figures did not in itself prove corruption, Astro AWANI reported.

The call came after Kampar MP Chong Zhemin lodged a report with the commission on Tuesday, asking it to investigate the role of Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also Rural and Regional Development Minister. Several DAP MPs were present when the report was lodged.

The questions raised centre on when the financial commitments were made, how approvals were obtained and whether the allocations were reconciled according to procedure.

No investigation has so far established any wrongdoing by Ahmad Zahid or any other individual.
