KUALA LUMPUR: The Registrar of Societies has suspended all Perikatan Nasional activities nationwide with effect from yesterday, and given the coalition 30 days to show why its registration should not be cancelled.

In a statement, the registrar said the action was taken under subsections 13(2) and 13(2A) of the Societies Act 1966.

The show-cause notice was issued on September 22, and the suspension order took effect a day later.

PN's registration has not been cancelled. The notice sets out the registrar's intention to cancel it should the coalition fail to give a satisfactory explanation within the period allowed.

The Bersatu complaint

The action followed a formal complaint by Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia over an alleged breach of PN's constitution, specifically involving the coalition's meeting on July 16.

Bersatu had earlier pressed the registrar to decide urgently on several alleged breaches by the PN leadership.

PN heads to court

PN secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said the coalition had taken note of the registrar's decision but did not agree with the basis for it.

PN was taking immediate steps through the legal processes available to defend the objectives of its establishment, he said.

Takiyuddin also said PN did not rule out the possibility that the action against it was the result of a mala fide agenda and political pressure from parties within and outside the coalition. He did not name anyone.

That is the coalition's own position, and no supporting evidence has been made public.

PN has also directed that only its chairman and secretary-general may issue statements on the matter.
