KUALA LUMPUR: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) on Tuesday, Sept 29, for observation, his son Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir confirmed, Bernama reported.

The 101-year-old former prime minister is now resting at the institute. He was admitted yesterday, and news of the development emerged on Wednesday morning.

His aide, Sufi Yusoff, denied rumours that Dr Mahathir had fainted the night before, The Vibes reported. He said they were still waiting for an update from the medical team, but that Dr Mahathir's condition was not a cause for concern.

Initial reports did not specify the reason for the admission or how long he would need to remain at IJN.

The development comes after the death of his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, on Monday, Sept 28. She died at IJN at the age of 100 and was laid to rest that evening at Pusara Negara in Precinct 20, Putrajaya.

Dr Mahathir attended the burial with his children and other family members. The information available, however, does not establish any medical link between his bereavement and his latest admission.

Earlier this year, Dr Mahathir received treatment at IJN after a fall at his home on Jan 6 left him with a fractured right hip.

By early February, he was allowed to spend nights at home in stages while continuing treatment and observation at IJN during the day. His recovery then also included physiotherapy.

That episode forms part of his earlier medical history, and nothing in this morning's reports links it to the Sept 29 admission.
