KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department has denied a claim circulating on Facebook that it had proposed allowing Rohingya nationals to apply for Malaysian driving licences.

In a statement, the department said the post was false and had been made to resemble official news.

The post used the department's name, identity and photographs from its press conference, potentially misleading the public and damaging the department's credibility, it said.

The department has lodged a report with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission for investigation and appropriate action.

"The public is urged to always refer to JPJ's official channels for accurate and verified information," the statement said.

It also cautioned the public against sharing unverified claims.

Bernama reported that the post had drawn more than 1,800 comments and 325 shares as of 9.15am. Those figures were the count at that time, not the current total.
