PONTIAN: Three siblings killed when their motorcycle collided with a lorry at Kampung Parit Haji Siraj in Kayu Ara Pasong here on Thursday were buried together in a single grave the same evening.

The bodies of Nor Daniel Aiman Norlizan, 18, Nor Daniel Fikri Norlizan, 11, and Puteri Naufa Raisha Norlizan, eight, were taken for funeral prayers at Masjid Jamek Kampung Parit Haji Siraj before burial at the village's Muslim cemetery.

Their mother, Julaiha Munaji, 44, was seen pouring water over her children's graves.

Their father, Norlizan Khamis, 42, thanked everyone who attended and helped the family with the funeral arrangements, including the school, the agencies involved and local residents.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim conveyed his sympathies to the family.

What police said about the crash

Pontian district police chief Superintendent Hadzrat Hussein Mion Hussain said the crash happened at about 7.20am on Jalan Kampung Parit Haji Siraj.

The Honda motorcycle carrying the three siblings had come from the direction of Jalan Parit Haji Omar before colliding with a Hino lorry travelling the other way.

"The motorcycle rider sustained serious injuries and was pronounced dead while receiving treatment at Pontian Hospital," he said.

The two pillion riders, aged 11 and eight, died at the scene.

The lorry driver, 69, was injured on his hands and both knees and received treatment.

Preliminary investigations indicated the motorcycle is believed to have struck the front right side of the lorry. The actual cause remains under investigation.

Both vehicles were impounded for investigation, which is being carried out under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Police asked anyone with information to contact the traffic investigation officer at the Pontian district police headquarters, Inspector Roshini Suppiah, at 016-2553983.

A journey to a school that was closed

The crash happened on the first of two days on which all schools in Johor were closed after air quality deteriorated because of the haze.

Julaiha had said earlier that she told her two younger children the scho

ol was not open that day, but both still wanted to go. Their older brother then took them on the motorcycle.

The case has raised questions about how quickly and clearly short-notice school closures reach families.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation and has not been officially linked to the closure.
